Paulson and Rudd: Asia and the World Order
The world has entered a period of historic change in the global order. A tectonic shift of relative power from the West to the East is underway. Asia’s increasing shares of global trade, capital flows and economic growth have profoundly altered the international economic system. The emergence of Asian nations as major powers has challenged policy makers in capitals and institutions worldwide. China plays a particularly significant role in this new status quo—its breakneck economic growth over the past 30 years has whetted Beijing’s appetite for respect overseas and facilitated a newfound confidence in its relations with neighboring powers.

While China’s rise within an ascendant Asia has attracted the attention of policy experts and journalists for decades, there are surprisingly few political leaders with deep expertise on the issue. Notable exceptions are Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia and fluent Mandarin-speaker, and Henry M. Paulson, former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and chairman of The Paulson Institute. These two world leaders share a truly visionary understanding of the issues at stake in the Asia-Pacific.

Asia Society is proud to present Mr. Rudd and Mr. Paulson in a discussion about the future of this changing global regime, how it will affect the West, and what economic, political and social developments will have the most significant impact. Their insights on China and the region are built on years of combined experience at the front lines of Asia’s advancing role in the world order.
